For Assignment 2, which is about making a channel ident, I want to include three elements that I think will show the uniqueness of Malaysia: traditional attire, traditional games, and traditional food. So, I compiled all these elements in the mood board. Since I'm planning to make my channel ident in cartoon form, I decided to use all cartoon pictures in my mood board. I didn't make a mood board for typefaces because I'm planning to make my channel ident full of graphics instead of words.
STYLE GUIDE
Brand logo
For my previous project, I didn't create a simple logo, but I will include the title of my channel in the last scene of my video.
Color Scheme
For this project, I want my ident to have colorful and vibrant hues to attract the audience. I also want to portray the fun and uniqueness of Malaysia to highlight our mixed races..
Fonts
The fonts I will use in this video will be the same as the ones I used in my channel banner: Dhrifted and Magic Retro.
Opening
I think the opening will feature the flower that represents Malaysia: the hibiscus.
Graphics
For the graphics, I want to make them animated because, in my opinion, animation will attract audiences no matter their age.
INSPIRATIONS
These are some of my inspirations. The first video contributes the most to my ideas for my project.
STORYBOARDS
These are my storyboards. My idea is that my channel ident will have 7 scenes.
PROCESS
First scene
For the first scene, I want the hibiscus to pop out in sync with the audio. Therefore, I think the background should be plain to avoid pattern clashes or overcrowding on the screen. For the color, I believe a light tone will enhance the hibiscus, but I don't want it to be too basic like white. So, I've decided on a beige background. Beige offers various shades, and after considering options on CreativeBoosters website, I think I'll go with cosmic latte #FFF8E7.
As you can see in my storyboard, I want the hibiscus to pop up. Since this is my first time using Adobe After Effects, I'm following this tutorial to learn how to create the pop-up effect:
For the hibiscus, I downloaded the vector image file from Freepik, then I adjusted the colors in Adobe Illustrator as follows:
- Petals: #8e1111
- Leaves: #3f8c13
- Pollen: #b5a533
Then, I imported and arranged this picture in Adobe After Effects, and followed the tutorial to make the transformation. I used the Scale tool to make it pop up.
Second scene
In this second scene, I'm planning to make the character cartoon wearing traditional attire pop up randomly. I'm considering showcasing Malaysian animated traditional attire inspired by this video
My initial plan was to use graphics from Canva, but I only found traditional attire for Malay and Chinese cultures with the same cartoon style. I want the cartoon style to be consistent throughout my channel ident, so I need cartoons for Indian, Kadazan, and Iban cultures as well. To overcome this problem, I will create the cartoons for Indian, Kadazan, and Iban cultures myself using Adobe Illustrator inspired from these two cartoons style.
1) Indian girl
For the Indian character, I think it would be better to choose a girl because I can emphasize her race by adding accessories to her hair and including a teep (colored dot on the forehead). So, I'll be using this cartoon as my reference.

It may not be exactly the same as the graphic from Canva, but it looks quite good.
2)Kadazan boy

As we know, the Kadazan race has a unique traditional hat with a distinctive design. So, I downloaded the hat from Canva and combined it with my cartoon, which I designed using Adobe Illustrator.
The result:
note: I only draw the character, the hat I took from canva
3) Iban cartoon

Since the feather is the most complicated part of this character, I downloaded it from Canva.
The result:
After finishing designing the character, I wanted to import it into After Effects. However, I wasn't sure how to save the character with no background from Illustrator. So, I exported it in JPG format and then uploaded it to Canva. From there, I saved it with no background.
Then, I imported those pictures (without a background) and created the pop-out effect using the scale function.

Third scene
For the third scene, I want to showcase a variety of Malaysian food by having them move from side to side. I'll achieve this by adding keyframes and adjusting the position from left to right. I plan to arrange the food in three rows: two rows moving from left to right and one row moving from right to left. This will create a dynamic effect in the scene. For the graphic, I'll download it from Canva.
result:
I chose a background with the color code #460324 because this color will make the colors of the food pop out.
Fourth & fifth scene
I decided to show two traditional Malaysian games, 'congkak' and 'dam haji'. I created the 'congkak' board, marble stones, and 'dam haji' pieces myself using Adobe Illustrator.
For the congkak scene, I'll make the marble stone stay at the center of the screen while the 'congkak' board moves, creating the illusion that we're moving the marble during a game of congkak.
I changed the color of the holes in the congkak to a more traditional wooden color to enhance its traditional look.
For the 'dam haji' part, I'll simply move the 'buah dam haji' from one square to another making 'M' shape to represent Malaysia. Typically, dam haji pieces are red and black, but I'm concerned that a sudden change in color from the previous scene might be jarring for the audience. So, I've decided to use a more muted color scheme: #8F5114 and #DAC79F to make it looks like a wooden set of 'dam haji'.
Sixth scene
For scene 6, I envision a transition scene resembling coconut leaves, as Malay people often use ketupat as a decoration during Hari Raya. This scene depicts the process before making ketupat, where we line up the coconut leaves first. It's a simple scene where I'll animate the shapes moving from top to bottom and vice versa. Then, I'll use the scale function to make the middle shape larger and transition to the next scene.
Last scene
In scene 7, the final scene, I'll display the title of the channel. I'll use the same font as mentioned earlier. I want to make the title typokinetic, with a unique motion for each word. For "Malaysian," I'll make it fall, using principles of motion design by adjusting the size of the font to appear wider and smaller as it descends. For "Charms," I'll simply make it pop up. Finally, I'll enlarge the entire title. Additionally, I'll add some traditional touches by using filigree. The subscribe graphic I downloaded it from Canva.

Audio
For the audio, I took it from this video and then adjusted the parts I wanted for my video. I edited the sound in CapCut as a video file, and then converted it to an MP3 format using a converter. I also add 'ting' sound on the last part of the video for subscribe sound.

Video adjustment
After finishing the audio, I added some additional parts before and after the third scene to match with the audio. I add mouth graphics that I downloaded from Freepik. Additionally, I eased all the keyframes to make the animation smoother.
